I'm heading to Indianapolis in the morning and, as usual the night before I leave for somewhere, I find myself unable to sleep. I keep running over the items already packed, whether they are enough/ correct, and whether I remembered everything I needed. I keep replaying in my head all of the things I was supposed to do today before I left, the blunders I made while trying to squeeze all of this in, and whether or not I forgot anything. I keep reminding myself that I need to get my shower utensils in the morning - oh god, how am I going to put my shampoo in my bag, oh god - and my contacts/glasses/solution/etc. I keep playing worst-case scenarios in my mind: what if I forgot my shower stuff, what if I wake up late (or not at all), what if I don't have the right clothes?

And then there are the other considerations: what if my presentation completely sucks? What if I freeze? What if I lose my jump drive? What if my computer stops working? What if my jump drive refuses to work? What if my room isn't powerpoint-equipped? What if it is powerpoint-equipped, but the powerpoint decides to stop working? What if someone asks me a question I can't answer or disagrees with my conclusion?

I've presented at a conference before, but not as myself with work exclusively my own. Dr. Panetta, where are you to help fill in the gaps where I can't? Tim, where are you to talk so I don't have to?

I gave the presentation to Jordan earlier, but presenting to your boyfriend while sitting on your own bed isn't exactly indicative of how my conference experience is going to be.

I am excited about attending, though. I love conferences. The other student attending and I are both presenting on Saturday morning - think about us while you are, more than likely, still sleeping.

One of my favorites (not really strange) was "A snowflake in an avalanche never feels responsible." Another one that a sorority sister got recently was "Green will be a lucky color for you." It was funny because our sorority colors are emerald and gold and we were in the middle of Spring Recruitment Week. Slightly spooky.
<lj:music>some Mando Diao, CCR, then CBS commercials/ inaugural coverage</lj:music>

I overslept this morning. My first class was at 9:30 and I woke up at 9:26. At this point, I was pretty certain I was skipping class. I logged on facebook, saw all of the posts about snow, checked outside, and, sure enough, it was snowing. I took this as a good omen: I was supposed to skip class to watch the Presidential Inauguration.

I'm glad I did. I'm ashamed to admit - it was my first time watching an inauguration completely through. It's not necessarily Obama himself; it just seemed like a good time to actually become involved in presidential history. I'm 21 (young, with the potential to *omg* change the type of life I've always lived). Maybe this is a defining time in my existence, both politically and personally. Anyway. It's amazing to see very nearly the whole country coming together to support its head of state and even an unpopular, retiring chief. There's something great about being a part of something bigger than yourself, folks, whatever it may be. It's also slightly surreal because this is the pinnacle of 'hope' in Obama's political career. Everyone's waiting with bated breath, whether they expect him to massively fail, succeed in his goals, or (if you're like me) fall somewhere in-between. Whatever happens, Obama has a lot to prove and it will be interesting to see what comes of his presidency. No one is perfect (Obama isn't a messiah, folks), but very few people are complete failures, either. No matter how effed up you consider Bush's term to have been, he managed to be dignified and unifying in some instances. In an extreme, even Hitler did some good things for Germany and his ability to unify was spectacular. If he had been a Humanitarian, imagine what good he could have done for the world. I guess my point here is that all of us have the potential to be great, given the adequate resources and the requisite attitudes. Obama has all the resources of the United States (even if they are somewhat diminished) at his disposal. Let's give him the chance to use them.

In non-political news, I had a dream last night that my oldest brother came to CBU and majored in mechanical engineering. I talked to my younger brother, Jake, this morning, and he said that he had a similar dream last night. Perhaps this means that good things are in store for him. He's pretty driven about certain things - I think that he could really succeed if he found the right channel. In fact, I think he has more potential for success than I do. I have a measure of wishy-washiness that keeps me from really doing great things.

I just realized that I haven't made a substantial 'what's going on this semester' post. Things have just been too intense for me to handle lately, I think. I'm really beginning to put things into the proper perspective though, so maybe there will be a substantial post to follow in the next day or so.

Keep an optimistic attitude for the next few years, folks. No one can completely agree with their leader's policies. America has great potential. We all just need to get over our petty partisan attitudes in order to fully tap into it.
